Massive Storm Hits US East Coast: 5,000+ Flights Cancelled, TSA Agents Quitting, and Hawaii Declares Emergency
A brutal storm system that buried Minnesota in snow is now targeting the East Coast with tornadoes, damaging winds, and heavy snowfall — even as a separate crisis unfolds in Hawaii, where a rare Kona storm has triggered historic flooding and a statewide emergency.

American travelers and residents are facing a perfect storm of disruption on Monday, as a massive weather system that devastated the Upper Midwest rolls toward the East Coast, the Department of Homeland Security funding crisis cripples airport security staffing, and Hawaii battles its worst flooding in recent memory.East Coast: Tornado Warning, Level 4 Severe Weather Risk
Forecasters have issued a rare level 4 out of 5 severe weather risk for parts of the Mid-Atlantic region stretching from the Carolinas to Washington D.C. The threat includes tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail — an unusual combination for mid-March. The same system already dumped over 10 inches of snow on parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Northern Michigan over the weekend.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport recorded 7+ inches of snow, with the Minnesota State Patrol reporting 464 property damage crashes between Friday midnight and Monday midnight, including one fatality and 40 injuries. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul declared snow emergencies, with the National Guard deploying tracked vehicles to assist stranded motorists.
5,000+ Flights Cancelled — TSA Crisis Makes It Worse
More than 5,000 flights have been cancelled or delayed across the country due to the storm system. The disruption is compounded by a severe staffing crisis at TSA: hundreds of agents have either quit or called out sick following the DHS funding lapse, which left thousands of federal security workers going without paychecks for over a month.
According to World Radio, approximately 300 TSA agents have quit, while many more are calling out sick. TSA agents are currently reporting to work without pay after missing their first full paycheck since the Homeland Security funding lapse began. The combination of weather cancellations and understaffed security checkpoints is creating chaos at major airports across the country.
Hawaii: Statewide Emergency Declared
Far from the mainland storm, Hawaii is facing its own crisis. A rare Kona storm has triggered historic flooding and dangerous landslides across the island chain, prompting Hawaii's governor to declare a statewide emergency. Kona storms — low-pressure systems that approach Hawaii from the south or southwest — are unusual and can bring intense, prolonged rainfall that overwhelms the islands' drainage systems.
Emergency services are conducting rescue operations in multiple communities, and residents in low-lying coastal areas and near rivers have been urged to evacuate immediately.
Travel Advice: What to Do Now
- Check your flight status directly with your airline before heading to the airport
- Allow extra time for security screening due to TSA staffing shortages
- Avoid driving in affected areas during peak storm hours Monday afternoon and evening
- If traveling to Hawaii, check with local authorities and your accommodation for safety updates
